When the Spring 2020 American Chemical Society National Meeting in Philadelphia was canceled due to COVID-19, Giving Circle Award recipient Mia Malgarini looked for another meaningful way to utilize funds awarded to her by Women for BW.

Knowing that STEM Ph.D. students at Oregon State University, a school near Mia’s hometown, are heavily dependent upon research projects to graduate and that many will find themselves behind due to the pandemic, Mia saw an opportunity to use the funds and her own time to help these students complete their research, fulfilling her original goal of “helping women in STEM get the representation we deserve.”

Mia explains how the Giving Circle award “had a huge impact on me since I was able to use it to help fellow graduate students stay on track…by helping them with research.”

She is currently attending Oregon State University pursuing her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry where she is a member of Dr. Vincent Remcho’s research group. Her dream is to create a simple device “capable of detecting concussions via blood test within moments of the injury happening.” She further explains how she wants to ensure the patent for this creation becomes an open-source so it can be affordable for all.

Mia’s advice for those considering applying for the Giving Circle award is to “give it a shot!” She further explains that “if I had never tried, I would have never been able to make the impact that I did… even if you are only able to help one person, that still is a step towards a brighter future.”

Thank you, Mia!
