Kristin Brewer & Kerry Mullen

In 2019, Assistant Director of Residence Life Kristin Brewer in collaboration with Director Kerry Mullen received the Women for BW award to fund FACTUALITY, a diversity training seminar for BW staff. In the form of a board game, staff members engaged in education regarding “structural inequalities in America that coincide with various intersecting identities.” Kristin describes the experience as impactful and eye-opening, creating dialogue on difficult topics such as redlining, pay inequity, funding, and voting.

“FACTUALITY was exactly the expert-led training our department needed,” says Kristin. “We were hoping it would expand on our fall diversity training exercises, and it did. FACTUALITY gave our staff a common educational experience, as we learned alongside one another and without judgement.”

FACTUALITY was created and led by Natalie Gillard and supported by the Women for BW award, the Office of Residence Life, Student Conduct, Commuter Services, and International Student Services.

Since implementing FACTUALITY, the Department of Residence Life has partnered with other organizations and individuals on and off campus to provide more robust diversity education and experiences for staff.

“We have implemented programs to support staff and brought new initiatives to help students,” adds Kristin. “Professional and graduate staff have been encouraged to dive deeper into the topics explored by FACTUALITY and incorporate it into their work.”

Kristin encourages others to apply for the Award and to provide detailed information about the award’s intended use and impact, as well as an assessment component.

“This is an incredible opportunity made possible by Women for BW,” she says. “It simply would not have been possible for us to provide an experience like FACTUALITY without their support.”

Thank you, Kristin and Kerry!
