Daixuan Ai '20

Daixuan came from China as an International Student to study Music Composition and Keyboard Performance at Baldwin Wallace. The Giving Circle fund she was awarded was used to attend a new music composer conference during the 2019 spring semester and a new music festival in summer of 2019.

Daixuan was able to study at European American Musical Alliance (EAMA) Summer Music Institution in Paris, France.  The experience “changed my approach to music theory, and it opened up my ears to harmony.” Further, she explained how the experience made her a “more sensitive musician” while she studied at BW and prepared her for pursuing a master’s degree in music as well as teaching music theory to undergraduate students.

She is currently at Indiana University Bloomington pursuing a master’s degree in music composition while teaching music theory as an assistant instructor.

Daixuan highly encourages anyone who is considering applying for the Giving Circle award to do so. “It allowed me to participate in a program that significantly impacted my major field of study, and I think it will also help many others do the same,” she shares. Daixuan advises those applying to not only think about their reason for applying, but to also consider “how their experience will impact those around them.”

Daixuan closes by saying, “I wouldn’t have considered teaching music theory if it wasn’t because of my study in Paris.”

Thank you, Daixuan!
