Join Us for a
"Drinks and Dialogue" Discussion: Creative
Placemaking

Thursday, November 14 at 5:30

Public spaces become enlivened. Crime rates drop. Business opportunities burgeon. Arts and culture drives synergistic community rebirth.  Creative placemaking is revitalizing neighborhoods around the nation. In Cleveland, neighborhoods like Ohio City, Gordon Square, Collinwood and St. Clair are all experiencing transformative growth.  But what does it take for “creative placemaking” to occur?  Partners from nonprofits, businesses, and the community need to energetically and systematically come together—around arts and culture.

Join the Arts Management Alumni Network for the second "Drinks and Dialogue" at Washington Place Bistro as we unpack the concept of creative placemaking and discuss how each of us can contribute to the development of vibrant, sustainable communities.  Feel free to invite a colleague from your workplace who might want to join us.  Led by Jake Sinatra '12, this event is designed to be an informal, yet informative, conversation.

Haven't given much thought to this topic, but want to arrive with a little background knowledge?  Check out the following resources before the conversation!  (And for those not able to join us, these articles might make interesting reading on their own.)

Arts Management Alumni Profile: Scott Walton '81

Scott Walton, ’81, was the first arts management graduate at Baldwin Wallace. Beginning his studies at BW as a Vocal Performance major in the Conservatory of Music, he quickly realized that his interests extended beyond the realm of performance. With guidance from faculty members in a variety of departments, Scott created a program that combined his passion for the arts with a desire to lead and grow cultural organizations. This novel interdisciplinary approach made Scott a forerunner of what would soon become the S/D/A Management program, laying the groundwork for many other students.

Scott’s curriculum in music, theater and management provided him with a solid foundation that launched him into a hugely successful career. The Walton Group, his New York-based PR and Marketing firm, has provided services to an impressive line-up of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Chicago, Cabaret and Death of a Salesman, as well as organizations including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Roundabout Theater Company, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and the League of American Theaters and Producers. Now based in San Francisco, Scott is currently consulting with the San Francisco Art Institute and PBS. Before working with these two organizations, he also held positions with KQED, San Francisco’s well-respected public media organization, and the American Conservatory Theater. Scott has been very active in charitable causes throughout his career, volunteering his time and talents to organizations such as the AIDS Emergency Fund and the New Conservatory Theater Center.

Scott is happy to speak with current Arts Management students to discuss internship possibilities or other career-related questions. He can be reached at scott@scottwaltongroup.com or (415) 350-5195.

Cory Isler ’12 recently caught up with Scott by phone for an interview about his work and service to the community.  Read the full interview here.

The Arts Management Association (AMA) was founded in 2004 to aid current BW Arts Management students in their professional development and networking. The following is a message from the current AMA executive director, Anna Fatica '13.

First off, I would like to thank you all for staying connected to the BW students who are a part of AMA. The fact that you all put so much time into giving back to students and reaching out with your abundant amounts of knowledge and experience means so much to me and my fellow members.

This year as executive director of AMA, I hope to continue AMA’s mission of providing service to arts organizations in the area and to BW, while also creating connections and professional development opportunities for our members. We have started the year off very strongly, and I am very excited to see how we progress. We have gained many new members, from freshmen to seniors. Every meeting, the group seems to get larger and larger!  New members are paired with a student who has been a member of AMA for at least two years in our Mentor Program, now in its second year.

We are also eagerly preparing for our annual auction on November 18 that will help us raise funds for our networking trip in the spring.  If you would like to donate to the auction, please contact me at afatica10@mail.bw.edu.  The deadline to donate is November 15.

Thank you all for being so supportive and fantastic. I look forward to seeing you very soon!

Tribute to Janiece Kelley-Kiteley

Janiece Kelley-Kiteley, emeritus dance faculty member of Baldwin Wallace, was beloved by many graduates of BW and especially those who participated in the S/D/A program.  Janiece, as she was known by all her students, passed away on Sept. 13, 2013 at age 69 from complications due to multiple myeloma. She was an incredible dancer, teacher and choreographer; her work has been seen on many of the stages across greater Cleveland, including many dance concerts and musicals at BW.  Her receipt of the BW Bechberger Award for Human Development, which recognizes excellence in working with students outside of the classroom, speaks to the quality of relationships she built with students and the care, support and encouragement for which she was known. Janiece taught many talented dancers but also encouraged novice dancers to succeed, each in their own way.  Her legacy lives on in all of the students she impacted and BW’s arts management program is stronger from her involvement and support.  Notes and remembrances of Janiece can be shared with her husband George Kiteley at 27308 Cook Road, Olmsted Falls, OH  44138.  - Bryan Bowser '97, '08
